GSC eCINEMA TO RELEASE LOCAL FILM ON VICE
Golden Screen Cinemas Sdn Bhd (GSC) today announced that it will distribute Janu Talkies’ controversial film, “Aandal”, and has scheduled it for a theatrical release in May 2005 over the GSC International Screens under its eCinema banner. Directed and produced by up and coming director, Sandosh Kesavan, Aandal is based on the true story of an Indian girl from a poor estate family, who is tricked into running away from home to marry the man she loves, only to be lured into drug abuse and prostitution. Newcomer Nandhini plays Aandal while the other main casts of the film are Ram of THR fame in his first big screen role, Shangkara also of THR fame, Raja, Mdm Yegavalli and Shanmuganathan. Director Sandosh said that he was attending an NGO programme when he met Aandal (not her real name), who not only related her story to him but agreed to allow it to be made into a movie. It is her hope that young innocent girls may learn from her own naivety and misfortune. Her one condition in allowing the making of the film is that her actual identity remains anonymous so as not to hurt or cause embarrassment to her family. Sandosh graduated from the Academy Film Malaysia and has worked as an Assistant Cameraman in India on two films, Mr Butler (Malayalam) and Time (Tamil). He has also directed a number of TV dramas, documentaries and commercials, as well as, local video clips, one of them being Siti Norhaliza’s video clip for Paloh. Aandal is shot on Digital format and is Sandosh’s first big screen movie. Aandal is one of a list of local films given a theatrical release under the GSC eCinema banner, which offers an alternate method of projection using high end LCD projector. Since the launch of GSC eCinema in August last year, independent underground filmmakers have had a chance to show their films in a proper cinema environment. Films shown to-date are Visits: Hungry Ghost Anthology by 4-award winning local directors, First Take Final Cut and Chemman Chaalai, which is still running.
