Peter Kelson is no stranger to evil. A respected member of New York's courtroom press, he has followed the cases of the most vicious criminals in history. Young, handsome and intelligent, Peter's latest novel is on the best seller list, his exotic girlfriend is deeply in love with him. His life, it would seem, has been blessed.

But lately, something unexplainable has been happening, forcing Peter to re-evaluate all of his beliefs. As the lines between good and evil begin to blur, Peter encounters an entity more sinister than any criminal he has ever encountered in the courtroom.

Years ago, Maya almost surrendered to the forces of evil. Now, she is dedicated to rescuing others from the dark abyss, and often assists her friend and mentor, Father Claude Lareaux, in ritual exorcisms of demonic spirits. One day, during an exorcism with a psychopathic killer, something goes terribly wrong. It appears they have lost the fight, when, as Maya looks on with horror, evil incarnate enters the body of the Catholic priest. Shaken and terrified, Maya struggles to translate the events that took place during the exorcism. After a terrifying brush with death, she uncovers an evil foretold in scriptures: Satan will be born into the body of a man. And the man who will open the Gates of Hell, Maya learns, is Peter Kelson.

Maya, now alone, resolves to prevent Satan from seizing Peter's body as his vessel. She confronts Peter with the details of her ominous encounter, but he arrogantly dismisses her claims as lunatic rantings. Even after the bizarre death of an elderly neighbor, and an inexplicable attempt on his life, Peter refuses to believe Maya's prophetic warnings. But soon, he discovers that he is engulfed in a world of Satanism, and that the devil's disciples are everywhere. Peter's life, he learns, was never blessed after all.

In a few hours, on the anniversary of his birth, it has been ordained that Peter Kelson will be delivered to Satan. And the ones assigned to carry out this horrifying task are his family and friends. But Maya Larkin will not surrender Peter to the torment of damnation, and the battle to save his soul will be the final test of her faith.
