London. Present time.

Frank (Rufus Sewell), and out-of-work actor, is constantly engaged in a game of one-upmanship with his friend Daniel (Tom Hollander), a successful young music executive with an eye for a pretty face and a lifestyle to die for. Caught somewhere in the middle is long-suffering Laurence (Joseph Fiennes), reference, peacemaker - and not without problems of his own.

Returning to London from a business trip to Minneapolis, Daniel meets Martha (Monica Potter), a young American woman, and cajoles a bemused airline check-in-girl into upgrading her to first class. He discovers she has bought a one-way ticket to a new life - with her total assets of ninety-nine dollars! By the time the place touches down he's totally smitten, but his plans to impress her further go spectacularly away when Martha fails to meet him for lunch the next day.

As Daniel woefully relates his depressing tale to his two friends in a cafe the next day he succeeds in aggravating Frank, and the two nearly come to blows. By one of those strange tricks of fate that can only happen in a London park on a sunny day, Frank then meets Martha - and delights in the prospect of scoring one over Daniel.

But then Daniel and Frank are not the only ones to have fallen under fair Martha's spell.

Unbeknownst to the pair of them, Laurence has also met Martha! On an impulse to meet Daniel's plane the day before, Laurence misses his friend at the airport but winds up giving a beautiful young American girl a lift into town. What followed might well have been the start of a beautiful love affair - but before long Martha puts two and two together and, not surprisingly, comes up with four...
