At the Campbell Center Dr. Catherine Deane is performing a difficult procedure on a schizophrenic patient who has developed a viral link to "Whalen's Infraction", a new virus where patients retreat into a catatonic state and live in a fantasy world where their greatest fears come alive.

Meanwhile, Carl Stargher is making final arrangements for another one of his helpless victims while Valentine, his Albino German Shepherd, stands guard. Like the others before her, this woman has drowned in the underground torture cell that Stargher has so carefully designed.

But just as Julia Hickson falls into Stargher's trap, Peter Novak, a tall brooding F.B.I. agent, has discovered another victim with all of the elusive serial killer's gruesome earmarks. And by chance, there's a sudden break in the case that leads Novak to Stargher.

Meanwhile, Dr. Deane is making a breakthrough with the Whalens' Infraction victim. The patient and the doctor are now wired into each other's minds using computers and hallucinogenic drugs. Catherine can explore her patient's world, and try to exorcise the vicious demons that control it.

As Novak and the F.B.I. search Stargher's house, they find the instrucments of a madman; videotapes of past victims, tattoo inks, body piercing tools and a television displaying a distraught Julia Hickson. She has less than 48 hours until she drowns in the cell like the other women before her, but no one knows where to find her -- and Stargher has mysteriously slipped into a coma.

Now there is only one person who can enter Stagher's deranged mind to save Julia -- Dr. Catherine Deane. With time ticking away, Novak's only key to solving the case is locked in the deep recesses of a madman's mind. But Dr. Deane is reluctant to enter into the dark world of wild beasts and Stargher's alter ego, the terrifying "King Stargher" because she knows they are heading straight into a battle of minds and their souls.
